Bergamo Orio al Serio to Milan: Getting Into the City

Bergamo Orio al Serio is Milan's third airport and, for many European travellers, the one their low-cost ticket lands at. It is a busy, efficient airport, but it is not in Milan: the terminal sits just outside Bergamo, about 50 km east of the city centre. If you know what to expect, it is an easy arrival. If you do not, the last part of the trip can take longer than the flight.

The drive into Milan

From the terminal, the car joins the A4 motorway almost immediately and heads west to Milan. On a weekday outside the rush hours, Google Maps gives about 45 to 50 minutes to the centre, depending on where your hotel is. The A4 between Bergamo and Milan is one of the busiest stretches in northern Italy, so at the morning and evening peaks the same trip can take noticeably longer. Your driver knows the alternative entries into the city and chooses based on the traffic at the time.

Late arrivals

Many flights into Bergamo land in the evening, and this is where a booked car makes the biggest difference. After a late landing there can be long queues for the coaches and taxis. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with your name, and the first 60 minutes after the actual landing are included. A delay of an hour does not change your plan or your price.

Meeting your driver

Bergamo's arrivals area is compact. After baggage reclaim, you walk into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits with a sign showing your name. They take your luggage and walk with you to the car. If you are a group, tell us in advance: a Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven, and the Sprinter Luxury VIP up to eight with their bags, so nobody has to split up.

Bergamo is often the better airport for the east

Because it sits east of Milan, Bergamo is closer than Malpensa to several popular destinations. Franciacorta's wineries and Lake Iseo are within an hour. The southern shore of Lake Garda is reachable in about an hour and a quarter in normal traffic. For the Dolomites, starting from Bergamo saves the drive across Milan. If your holiday starts in one of these places, it can be worth choosing your flight around Bergamo.

Stop in Città Alta

Bergamo's upper town, Città Alta, is a short drive from the airport and one of the most beautiful historic centres in Lombardy, with Venetian walls and a funicular. If you land in the morning and your hotel in Milan will not be ready until the afternoon, a stop for lunch in Città Alta is a pleasant way to use the time. Your driver can wait or meet you at an agreed point.

Departing from Bergamo

For your return flight, plan the drive with traffic in mind. From central Milan, the A4 is predictable at night and early in the morning, but less so between about 7:30 and 9:30 and in the late afternoon. We confirm the pick-up time the day before based on your flight. If you are driving from Lake Garda or Franciacorta, the trip to Bergamo is usually shorter than to Milan's other airports.

Which car to book

For one to three passengers with standard luggage, a Mercedes E-Class is ideal. For a more spacious rear cabin, choose the S-Class. For families and groups, the V-Class and the Sprinter Luxury VIP carry everyone and everything in one vehicle. All prices are fixed in writing before you travel.

Travelling on to the lakes or the mountains

If you are heading straight to the Dolomites, Lake Garda or Lake Iseo, say so when you book. The driver collects you at Bergamo and drives directly to your hotel, with a stop on the way if you need one, so you do not lose an afternoon going into Milan and out again.
