Milan to Lake Garda: Which Shore to Choose

Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake, and it is big enough to feel like several different destinations. The flat southern shore, with Sirmione and Desenzano, is easy to reach and lively; the western shore has grand villas and a Mediterranean climate; the eastern shore is lined with wine villages; and the northern tip, framed by mountains, is a paradise for sailing and walking. Choosing the right shore makes a real difference to your stay, and to your time on the road from Milan.

How far it is from Milan

Lake Garda lies east of Milan, which means Linate and Bergamo are closer to it than Malpensa. On an ordinary weekday morning, Google Maps gives about an hour and forty minutes from the Duomo to Desenzano, on the southern shore, and a similar time to Sirmione. From Linate, Desenzano is about an hour and twenty minutes. The northern tip, at Riva del Garda, is about 207 km from central Milan and close to three hours by car.

The southern shore: Sirmione and Desenzano

The southern shore is the most accessible. Sirmione sits on a narrow peninsula with a medieval castle and Roman remains, and is one of the most visited places on the lake. Desenzano is a lively town with a harbour and good connections. This shore is a good choice for a short stay, for a first visit or if you want to combine the lake with Verona, which is close by.

The western shore: Salò, Gardone Riviera and Limone

The western shore, in Lombardy, is greener and more elegant, with historic villas and hotels. Salò and Gardone Riviera, home of the Vittoriale degli Italiani, are reached in about two hours from Milan in normal traffic. Further north, the road becomes dramatic, with tunnels cut into the cliffs, until Limone sul Garda. It is beautiful, but slower, so allow extra time in summer.

The eastern shore: Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine

The eastern shore, in the Veneto, is known for its wine villages, olive groves and views of Monte Baldo. Bardolino, Garda and Lazise are charming small towns with lakefront promenades; Malcesine, further north, has a castle and a cable car up the mountain. This shore is ideal for those who want to combine the lake with wine tasting and Verona.

The northern tip: Riva and Torbole

The northern end of the lake, in Trentino, is surrounded by mountains and swept by regular winds, which make it famous for sailing and windsurfing. Riva del Garda and Torbole are lively in summer and a good base for hiking and cycling. It is the furthest part of the lake from Milan, so it suits longer stays rather than day trips.

Airports for Lake Garda

For Lake Garda, Linate and Bergamo are the most convenient Milan airports, and Verona's airport is closer still to the southern and eastern shores. If you are flying into Malpensa, a direct transfer to the lake avoids a night in Milan, but the drive is longer, typically around two hours to the southern shore.

A day trip or a stay

A day trip from Milan to the southern shore is possible, especially to Sirmione, but most of the lake rewards a stay of a few days. If you want to see several shores, a chauffeur with an hourly booking lets you move between villages, visit a winery and stop for lunch without worrying about parking, which is limited in summer.

Choosing the vehicle

For couples, a Mercedes E-Class or S-Class is comfortable for the drive. Families and groups usually prefer the Mercedes V-Class, with room for up to seven and plenty of luggage, or the Sprinter Luxury VIP for up to eight. Prices are fixed in writing before you travel.

Combining Garda with Verona

Verona is close to the southern and eastern shores, which makes it easy to combine a lake stay with an evening at the Arena or a day in the old town. Your driver can take you there and back on the same day, and wait while you visit.
