Milan to Monaco and the Riviera by Car

Monaco is close enough to Milan for a day of meetings and far enough that the journey deserves some planning. There is no direct high-speed train between the two, and flying means reaching an airport, waiting, landing in Nice and then driving again. For many of our clients, a private car from the hotel in Milan to the hotel or the port in Monte Carlo is the simplest option. This guide explains the drive, the dates that change everything and how to choose the car.

The route and the time

Monte Carlo is about 305 km from central Milan. The motorway runs south towards Genoa, then west along the Ligurian coast past Savona, Alassio and Sanremo, and crosses into France at Ventimiglia, a few kilometres before Monaco. In normal traffic the journey takes about three hours and fifty minutes from the centre of Milan. From Malpensa the time is about the same, because the airport is already on the west side of the city.

The coastal section is a long series of tunnels and viaducts. It is an impressive road with the sea on one side, and it is also a road where an accident or roadworks can slow traffic, because there are few alternatives. Your driver checks traffic before leaving and on the way.

When traffic is heavy

The coastal motorway is busiest in July and August, on holiday weekends and on Friday and Sunday afternoons in summer, when traffic between the north of Italy and the Riviera is at its peak. On those days we suggest leaving early in the morning or later in the evening. For a business day in Monaco, an early start from Milan usually gives a clear run and an arrival before mid-morning.

The Grand Prix and the Yacht Show

Two events change the way Monaco works. During the Grand Prix, in late spring, the circuit runs through the streets of the Principality: roads close, others change direction and access to many hotels depends on passes and times. During the Monaco Yacht Show in September the port area is busy and some roads are restricted.

If you are travelling during either event, book the car at the same time as the hotel or the yacht, and tell us the exact address. We check access in advance and plan the drop-off point. For the official dates of each event, refer to the organisers' websites; we confirm the plan once the dates of your stay are fixed.

Arriving in Monaco

Monaco is small and dense, with steep streets and many one-way roads. We drop guests at hotels such as the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, the Hôtel Hermitage and the Monte-Carlo Bay, at private residences, and at the port for guests joining a yacht. For yacht arrivals, tell us the name of the yacht and the berth if you have it, so the driver can go to the right gate.

Continuing along the Côte d'Azur

From Monaco the coast continues into France. Nice is about four hours from Milan, Cannes about four hours and twenty minutes. Many clients combine Monaco with a stay in Nice, Antibes or Cannes, or with a flight from Nice airport. We can quote each transfer separately, or a full itinerary.

Stopping on the way

The Ligurian coast offers good places to break the journey. Portofino is a detour from the main route but works well as the first stop of a slower trip. Further west, Alassio and Sanremo are directly on the way. A lunch stop of an hour or two is easy to add; tell us when you request the quote and the waiting time will be included in the price.

Choosing the vehicle

For one or two people the Mercedes S-Class is the most comfortable car for nearly four hours on the motorway, and the one most of our business clients choose for Monaco. The Mercedes E-Class is a practical alternative. Families and small groups travel in the Mercedes V-Class, which seats up to seven with their luggage. For larger groups or an event team, the Sprinter Luxury VIP carries up to eight passengers with luggage.

Documents

Monaco is reached through France, and both Italy and France are in the Schengen area, so there are normally no systematic border checks. Carry your passport or identity card anyway, because checks can be carried out at any time.

How to book

Send us the pick-up address or flight number, the date and time, the number of passengers and suitcases and the destination in Monaco. We reply with a written, all-inclusive price, usually within 30 minutes. Fuel, tolls, VAT and the driver's waiting time for agreed stops are included.
