In July and August, though, half of Milan heads to the coast on Friday afternoon and returns on Sunday evening, and the motorways towards Versilia slow to a crawl. We plan departures around those peaks and will tell you honestly when leaving an hour earlier saves an hour on the road. From Malpensa the trip takes about three and a half hours.
